Die Geschichte

This old tower was destroyed twice throughout its history: in the Thirty Years War and again in the War of the Palatinate Succession. Restoration was started in 1858. But wait, it was destroyed again, this time in 1945 by Allied bombers who were aiming for something else (there are some old bomb crators in the woods nearby). It was rebuilt again in 1989 and can be enjoyed today.

Tipps für Ihren Besuch

If you want to enjoy the view, be prepared to climb up a spiral staircase in partial darkness. There is parking right out front, but finding the turnoff isn’t easy. Exit the A-63 at exit 10 “Freimersheim” and make a right onto L401. Right before the L401 descends the hill into Alzey, there will be a small turn off on the right. Slow down or you will miss it, especially if the crops have grown high enough to obscure the exit. I know I always say to follow the signs, but in this case there are none. You could also continue down the hill and park at the pool and follow the hiking signs to the tower from there. Either way, enjoy the view and it gets windy up there!
