Die Geschichte

The area around the KMC is no stranger to war and conflict. In fact, this region has changed hands between the Germans and the French going back hundreds of years. Building fortifications is something both nations have been doing for centuries and the Westwall is a recent example of that tradition. Also known as the Sigfried Line, this series of bunkers was built in the 1930s just across the border from the French Maginot Line. Many parts of the nearly 400 mile-long line still exist, but many are not preserved for the public.

The Westwall Museum just outside of Pirmasens is a great example of the preservation of history and you can visit it during the open season. The museum is only open on weekends so be sure to check their opening times.

You can pop across the border and check out the Maginot Line at Simserhof to see its French counterpart.

Enjoy and don’t forget to make a small donation to the caretakers.

Tipps für Ihren Besuch

There is parking available right out in front, unless it’s crowded. It gets cold in the bunker so bring a hoodie, even in the summer.
