Die Geschichte

Every other weekend during the football season, this monumental facility hosts near 50,000 screaming fans. The glory experienced by all in attendance of that ball hissing into the back of the net is something that can only be done in the flesh. This place on the hill has been the beating heart of the city of Kaiserslautern for decades.

The team, FC Kaiserslautern or “The Red Devils”, is one of the founding teams of the Bundesliga, the German football league. The Bundesliga, much like its counterparts in other European countries, boasts some of the best players in the world and the Red Devils have been home to many of those legendary players. Michael Ballack, Miroslav Klose, and Kevin Trapp are but a few of the home-grown players that have trodden these hallowed grounds. The aforementioned Klose holds the FIFA record for the most goals scored in World Cup games at 15 goals, beating out the previous holder in 2014.

But the real legends have their names emblazoned on the stadium itself. The official name of the complex is the “Fritz-Walter-Stadium”. Who was Fritz Walter you ask? He is the man responsible for Germany’s first World Cup win in 1954. The man from Enkenbach-Alsenborn, just down the road from Kaiserslautern, and his brother Ottmar, were instrumental in the “Miracle of Bern”. The Stadium forever bears their names.

Fun fact: the stadium is one of the few in Germany that does not bear a sponsor name. Wonder why that is?

Tipps für Ihren Besuch

On game days, you can park at the west or east Park-and-ride and take a shuttle to the stadium. Or, you can take a train to Kaiserslautern main station and walk up the Betzenberg. This walk is an experience on its own as street vendors and scarf-toting fans start their “pre-gaming” festivities on the streets leading to the stadium hours before kick-off.
