Die Geschichte

This lake is a great destination if you’re willing to make the journey and the journey is half the adventure in this case. Just south of the Alps, it is in both Italy and Switzerland.

Drive around the lake and see the wonderful little towns where there is plenty to see, tons of great restaurants and too many little shops selling everything from local olive oil in neat little cans to hand-crafted cheese. Stay in one of the grand hotels in the town of Stresa, or find an apartment close to the lakeshore.

There are campgrounds that offer water activities like Stand-up Paddling, kayaking and designated swimming areas. Towns like Luino on the east shore host huge flea markets.

Don’t forget to visit the islands of Bella, Pescatori and Madre. There you will find narrow allways packed full of shops and bars. Get there by taking the water taxis from Stresa that leave every 30 minutes.

There is no shortage of things to do and see around this lake, so take a week off and take your time to enjoy the sights!

Tipps für Ihren Besuch

Like many destinations in Italy, they get really crowded in the summertime. We recommend going in September or October. All the attractions are still in operation, including the boats to the islands (they all shut down service in late October for the winter). The weather is cool and it is not so busy. There is plenty of public parking in Stresa right on the shore but many other towns on the lakeshore have limited parking. We recommend parking and leaving your car there and take public transportation including the boat taxis.
