Die Geschichte
This castle is another in a string of examples of the Peasants’ War or the Thirty Years’ War not being kind to our stone-stacked fortresses of old. Read the placards on castles in Rheinland-Pfalz and you will see this trend. Despite the lack of peasant enthusiasm for castles in the Middle Ages, we at KMCx love them, and Madenburg is no exception.
The original builders could not have picked a more picturesque spot, but I’m sure they had more of a strategic idea in mind, but the views are a bonus. Madenburg overlooks the Southern Wine Road to the east and the Palatinate Forest to the west with a commanding view. The east side of the castle grounds is even a launch point for para gliders.
There is plenty of places to sit and enjoy this little piece of history and the castle is always hosting events. They have a restaurant, a little hut for cold weather and even a self-service hut for food and drinks. See their website for more information.
Tipps für Ihren Besuch
You cannot drive directly to the castle. There is a large parking lot with plenty of room and it is about a half a mile (about 850 meters) uphill to the castle. See you there!
