Ramstein Airshow Disaster Memorial

This solemn reminder of the darkest day in Ramstein’s history lists the names of those who perished

Region/City: Ramstein

The Story

In the 1980s, Ramstein Air Base hosted some of the biggest airshows in Europe. On the 28th of August, 1988, the Italian Aerobatics team crashed in a mid-air collision that sent a plane into the crowd. 70 people died and over 300 were seriously injured in a mass-casualty event for which local emergency services were not prepared.

This event changed how airshows were conducted and no further events were held at Ramstein.

Visit the memorial and see the list of names, many of them within the same family.

If you want to find out more about the disaster, go see the exhibit at the Docu Center Ramstein.
