This wonderful museum is already a host to great exhibits, but on one weekend in January, they host science fiction and retro video game enthusiasts.
A Treasure Trove for Nerds!
Pokeman Cards, Star Wars figures, Manga books…what more do you need? Every January, the Technik Museum in Speyer offers just that…and more.
It is amazing how a film that is 50 years old still captures the imaginations of both kids and adults. Star Wars characters roamed the museum grounds freely and were more than willing to stop and bask in the admiration of selfie-taking fans. Chewbacca, Jawas, multiple Darth Vaders and Storm Troopers of all sorts were in attendance, just waiting to photo bomb innocent civilians!
For video game enthusiasts, there was a plethora (yes, they had a plethora) of old computers like the venerable old Commador 64, arcade games like Galaga and the OG Packman, and there was even a guy fixing old hand-held gaming consols.
All free to play and explore (we love exploring and you know this!) and some vendors were selling old game cartridges to collectors.
For nastalgia nerds like us, this setup was absolutely perfect.
Vendors sold classic toys, old game consoles and memorabilia. Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards graced many a tables. Custom patches and stickers, key chains, you name it!
Apparently, Jawas are highly afraid of Storm Troopers. A short time after this incident, the Troopers noticed some of their buddies from that one time on Tatooine and strolled over to engage in tales of their adventures on that desert planet. There was much first-bumping and laughing.
Droid-builders were also present. “Girl-2-D2” stood sentinel in front of her maker’s information stand, making chirping sounds occasionally. No effort was expended to offer interpretation of the chirps, but we assumed that they were just friendly banter. But who knows? Maybe the chirping was actually digital flirting directed at the bedazzled Storm Trooper?
The Museum
We didn’t forget to tour our favorite museum while we were there. There were fighter planes of all sorts and national origins, trains, race cars and the infamous U-17 submarine. We didn’t make it into the 747 this time, but since we’ve done that many times, we decided to skip it. We also toured the Wilhelmsbau next door to the museum where interesting exhibits were on full display.
