You have probably driven on this road while going to the west gate of Ramstein Air Base. You probably didn’t know that this road was part of the O.G. Reichsautobahn, built in the late 1930s. Not only that, but the Luftwaffe used it as a makeshift runway during World War 2 and so did the Americans before Ramstein AB was built.
Going all the way from CTS in the west to the westgate of RAB, this stretch of road is full of history. The road was still used as a temporary runway well into the 1980s and there are still remnants of aircraft arresting gear on the sides of the road.
