Frankenstein Castle

The castle ruin sits on a hilltop in the Hochspeyer Valley, offers stunning views, and a short, but crazy hike.

Region/City: Palatinate Forest

The Story

Often confused with the “other” Frankenstein Castle, the one made famous by Mary Shelley, this castle ruin is just down the road from the east side of Kaiserslautern. You can drive or even ride your bike there because there is a separated bike path that runs alond the B37. Feel free to poke around when you get up there and enjoy a commanding view of the valley in both directions.

Marvel at the engineering not only of the castle itself, but also the Ludwigsbahn rail line that runs through a tunnel underneath the hill upon which the castle is built. This castle has a long and crazy history which is too much to tell here. But a quick internet search (don’t forget there is a more famous cousin also called Frankenstein!) will fill you in on the deets.

Here is a good website to get your research started!

Tips for your visit

Parking is very limited. But there is hope! You can take your bike or even the train! Be prepared for a hike up the hill. It gets pretty steep but not to worry, the goats that roam the hillside will show you the way!
