The castle ruin sitting on a hilltop in the Hochspeyer Valley, offers stunning views, a crazy hike and a long, dark past.
Frankenstein Castle

Region: Rheinland-Pfalz
Often confused with the “other” Frankenstein Castle, you know the one made famous by Mary Shelley, this castle ruin is just down the road from the east side of Kaiserslautern. You can drive or even ride your bike there because there is a separated bike path that runs alond the B37. Fell free to poke around when you get up there and enjoy a commanding view of the valley in both directions. Marvel at the engineering not only of the castle itself, but also the Koenigsbahn rail line that runs through a tunnel underneath the hill upon which the castle is built. This castle has a long and crazy history which is too much to tell here. But a quick internet search (don’t forget there is a more famous cousin also called Frankenstein!) will fill you in on the deets.
Parking is very limited. But there is hope! You can take your bike or even the train! Be prepared for a hike up the hill. It gets pretty steep but not to worry, the goats that roam the side of the hill will show you the way!
