This castle ruin stands atop the hill at the gateway to the Rhein River Valley and the Deutsche Weinstrasse
This castle was built by Friedrich III between 1238 and 1250 at the strategic location on the edge of a rocky outcropping at the end of the Eckbach valley. With a commanding view over the Rhein River Valley, visitors can climb the old castle tower and marvel in the beauty of miles and miles of grapevines. This area was settled by Romans who wished to stake their claim by making wine over 2000 years ago.
Now the castle offers a restaurant, a museum and even a venue for concerts in the summer. When it gets dark, the castle is illuminated by lights of purple and blue. Be sure to check it out and don’t forget to take some selfies for your fans.
There is parking right in front of the castle, however, it is hit and miss if spots are available. There is more parking around the town but you will have to hike up the hill to the castle itself. No worries though, you will have to explore the narrow alleyways and streets which is part of the experience.
