This restored Roman winery is an open-air museum that hosts wine fests
Romans began migrating to the west side of the Rhein River around 50 B.C.E. In a sort of Manifest Destiny, conquered Celtic land became Roman cities, villas, wineries, quarries and bases for the military. The area of the Deutsche Weinstrasse owes its wine culture existence to these early Roman settlers.
This location is a stunning example of a genuine Roman winery. Excavated in 1981, it has been rebuilt over the years, paying homage to it’s Roman forebears. You can freely tour the grounds and follow the self-guided tour signs (German only), inspect the masonry work, and enjoy the view of grapevines as far as the eye can see. You may even catch a glimpse of the Alpaca tours that roam the gently sloping hillsides.
Bring a picknick blanket and chill under the shade of the fig trees and the Scotts pines. You deserve it!
There is a small parking lot just to the north of the town of Ungstein off the B271 highway and then its a short trek up the hill to the villa.
