Dauerstau Selz (Nutria Lake), Alzey

This artificial lake has some unique inhabitants

The Story

This lake, created by an earthen dam in Alzey, is a nice place to indulge in some “animal watching”. At last count, there is a family of six nutria (an invasive species similar to beavers) and they want to meet you. If you stand still for 3-5 minutes, they will emerge from the far side of the lake to beg for food. But beware! The signs say to not feed the animals. There are also plenty of ducks and other waterfowl so bring your zoom lens! In the spring, migrating geese will hatch their young (who also will beg for food!).

Combine with: Wartberg Tower, Alzey

Tips for your visit

You can park at the parking lot in front of the playgound and the access road is west of “am Herdry”. There is also a nice restaurant/beer garden called “Wirtshaus in der Hansenmühle Alzey” where you can enjoy some food and turn your kids loose at the neighboring playground.
