The Story:

This museum boasts an outstanding collection of aircraft, tanks and cars. Driving east on the A-6 Autobahn, you will see the Concord and it’s copy-cousin the TU-144 standing proudly on the roof of the main exhibit building. In fact, the authorities had to put a wall adjacent to the museum to prevent looky-loos causing accidents! They have an impressive collection of World War 2 and Cold war armored vehicles like Panther tanks and M-48 Pattons. Some of the other aircraft that are displayed on stanchions have slides so you don’t have to walk back down the stairs, it’s a great time!

The newest edition to the museum, the German Cold War era U-17 submarine faced an incredible journey to her final resting place in Sinnsheim. Check out the Stars and Stripes article. In a nutshell, she sat waiting in Speyer for transport, which they accomplished by putting her on a barge in the nearby Rhine River, sent her north to Mannheim to the convergence of the Neckar River, took a break in Heidelberg, then on to a ridiculously large truck that wove its way through towns and villages to Sinnsheim. It was an epic road trip indeed. Now, as of March of 2025, visit her yourself.

Tips for a Good Trip:

There is plenty of parking but it is all paid parking. The automated system scans your license plate and lets you in. The kiosks don’t take cash or coin but your American ATM card should work, just don’t forget your license plate number! There are plenty of things to see so expect to stay at least 4 hours. They have a cafeteria-style restaurant and they even serve local-brewed beer in commemorative bottles which make great souvenirs. Don’t forget to visit the shop for a dope refrigerator magnet!
