Citadelle de Bitche

This French fort was the scene of a major battle in the Franco-Prussian War, now it’s a self-guided tour through creepy catacombs

Region/City: Alsace, France

The Story

This fortress stands atop a hill in the French city of Bitche in the once contested region of Alsace.

This place has seen it all: The French Revolution (done that), Franco-Prussian War (lived it), Second World War (lived through that too). The fortress started off as a simple rocky high ground with some defensive works in the 12th century and evolved into a complex facility with underground catacombs. Now you can come visit the fort and get a glimpse into history.

Not far down the road from Simmserhof and Zweibrücken, you can make a great day trip just an hour from the KMC.

See their official website for more information here.

Tips for your visit

There is a self-guided tour through the catacombs which is great for adults but might be a little scary for children.
