Kaiser Wilhelm I is a major figure in German history. Maybe that’s why there are monuments celebrating him all over the place? He was instrumental in fighting Napoleon and kicking the French out of German Confederated territory as well as fighting the French again in 1871-72 and uniting the Confederation into a united German state. But you don’t need to know all that in order to enjoy this historic place.
Built on the spot where the Mosselle river flows into the Rhein, this statue towers over the convergence. There are plenty of restaurants and gift shops to assist you on your visit and you can cap your trip by taking the gondalas across the river to Fort Ehrenbeilstein where the views are of the kind that make lasting memories.
Koblenz is a great place to stop when you’re heading north to cities like Cologne. We recommend taking the A-61 north and getting off the Autobahn at the Boppard exit (exit 41), stop in Boppard for the views and take the Bundesstrasse B9 north along the west bank of the Rhein. There is also a nice bike path that is separated from the B9 that follows the same route.
In Koblenz, there is usually plenty of parking. You can park right on the south bank of the Mosselle at the Peter-Altmeier-Ufer. It may be full during peak times but we have used it a couple of times with no issues.
