The Story

You may have seen this crazy structure standing sentinel on the side of a hill while driving down the famous “Weinstrasse”.

It is yet another castle in Rheinland-Pfalz that was blown up either by the French or destroyed during the Peasants War. But don’t worry about that. All you care about is having a place to rest your weary legs and enjoy the view. Thirsty? Grab a cold wein schorle while you enjoy the fruits of civilization! The little restaurant also offers food to restore your powered-out muscles.

There is also a little museum with models of what the castle looked like before it was partially destroyed. Got the legs? Then climb up the stairs of the tower for some extra-spectacular views of the Weinstrasse. We recommend going in late summer when the grape vines are full of leaves.

See you there!

Tips for your visit

You cannot drive up to the castle so you will have to hike up the hill. See the Komoot map to guide you from the parking lot. During peak seasons, parking can be limited so be sure to plan ahead. Have fun!

  1. We love this place! It can be a tough hike up the hill and we often use it as a stop when we hike the trails from Bad D.
